WORK MUSIC
They got this new singer from England. Her name is Same but it's pronounced
Charmin - like "please don't squeeze the Same." She's big - BIG BIG BIG, but
not as big as Big Maybelle. There also are these sheetrocking Brit
prettyboys, Durok Durok. Their hit was "Hey Gyp". Have you heard the song
the Ethiopians did for themselves - "I'm Hungry." That's all I keep hearing
on my work radio. And I keep thinking this music doesn't have NOTHING to do
with work. You can't WORK to it - it's music to go hide in a corner and pick
your nails shit. Alright, work music IS supposed to be generic - otherwise
you stop and listen, mo. But it doesn't have to be synthetic. It's got to be
a pushing around that you can lean your back into dependably; something that
will move your feet for you when the last thing they did voluntarily was
drag you home from the X town afterhours club. We are now talking about
Blues, Rhythm and Blues and minimal R&R. It doesn't take hits to make people
work, not even songs. What it takes are basic riffs and people who know how
to be shamelessly repetitious without being redundant.
That's why I'm proud to be one of the Workdogs. We know we could be from
IN-gland, but we also know that that would be wrong. Let's be realistic
about this Modern World: these days a band doesn't have the TIME to
practice. A modern band doesn't have TIME for writing new music or learning
new songs. That would be wrong.
Equally wrong in the Workdogs opinion:
LOOKING FOR GIGS-Who's got the TIME - besides you have to talk to someone.
We play when something falls in our laps.
BUSINESS MEETINGS - no TIME.
PROMOTING THE BAND - why bother? None of us even live in the same state. We
only get together for gigs and recording.
That's when we decide who's in the band. Sometimes it's difficult. It's hard
even writing this piece. The fact is we like our day jobs WAY better than
music. We only do music because we have to.
